Respiratory tract infections occur when pathogens infect the airways, ranging from the nose and pharynx to the trachea and lungs.
Most cases are viral, such as the common cold, influenza, or COVID-19. Bacterial infections include pneumonia and pharyngitis/tonsillitis.
